Care Instructions

Your Sakina prayer mat is made to be part of your daily ritual for years to come. With a little care, its colours stay rich, its surface stays soft, and it folds away as neatly as the day it arrived. Here is everything you need to keep it at its best.

Everyday Care

  • Shake out or gently brush the mat after use to lift dust and keep the pile fresh.
  • Treat small spills straight away: blot (don't rub) with a clean, slightly damp cloth.
  • Let the mat breathe in a well-aired spot rather than storing it away while still warm or damp.

Washing

Every Sakina mat is machine washable and designed for easy, everyday care.

  • Machine wash on a gentle or delicate cycle using cold water and a mild detergent.
  • Wash separately or with similar colours, and avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can dull the finish over time.
  • For a quick refresh or for spot cleaning, a gentle hand wash in cool water works beautifully too.
  • To protect the design and the non-slip base, skip harsh wringing and twisting.

Velvet vs Microfiber

  • Velvet: Always use cold water on a gentle cycle and reshape the pile by hand while damp. For extra protection, turn the mat over so the velvet faces inward, or place it in a mesh laundry bag.
  • Microfiber: Our easy-care microfiber is especially forgiving. A cool gentle wash is all it needs, and it dries quickly with minimal fuss.

Drying

  • Air dry flat or over a rail, away from direct sunlight and strong heat.
  • Do not tumble dry on high heat. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest or no-heat setting only.
  • Make sure the mat is fully dry before folding or storing to keep it fresh and crease-free.

Smoothing Creases & Ironing

  • Light creases usually relax on their own once the mat is laid flat for a few hours.
  • Do not iron directly on velvet. Use a low heat setting and steam gently from the back of the mat, never pressing a hot iron onto the pile.
  • For microfiber, a cool iron on the reverse side, or a quick steam, removes stubborn folds with ease.

Keeping the Non-Slip Base Effective

  • The grip comes from the textured backing, so keep it clean and free of dust and lint, which can reduce traction over time.
  • Wash in cold water and avoid high heat, which can affect the base over the long term.
  • Always let the base dry completely before use or storage.
  • Use the mat on clean, dry floors for the most secure footing.

Folding & Storing Your Travel Mat

Sakina mats are designed to fold down small and travel light. A little care here keeps them looking pristine on the go.

  • Fold along the mat's natural lines rather than forcing new creases.
  • Store flat or loosely folded in a cool, dry place, away from heavy objects that could press in permanent marks.
  • For travel, slip the folded mat into your bag without over-compressing it; any light fold lines will relax once it's laid out again.
  • Keep the built-in qibla compass away from extreme heat and avoid placing it next to strong magnets for a reliable reading.

Caring for Your Monogram

Your free personalised monogram is crafted to last, and a few gentle habits keep it crisp.

  • Wash on a gentle cycle in cold water to protect the embroidered or printed initials.
  • Never iron directly over the monogram. Steam from the back or iron around it on a low setting.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh detergents, which can fade personalised detailing.
  • Air dry rather than using high heat to keep the lettering sharp and the colours true.
